Emesent

Emesent is a world leader in drone autonomy with head office in Brisbane.

Absolute Translations was engaged by Emesent in 2020 to assist with localising their marketing material into Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil) and Chinese (PRC), Japanese and Russian initially. We translated brochures, presentations, spec sheets and videos, as well as Emesent’s website.

To cater for their growing client base and resellers globally, Emesent needed our assistance in additional languages, such as French, Italian, Polish, German, Arabic, Greek, Bulgarian and Korean.

Up until now, we’ve translated a combined 580K+ words for Emesent in the languages above.

emesent

The client

Emesent is a world leader in drone autonomy, LiDAR mapping, and data analytics. Emesent was founded in 2018 by Dr Stefan Hrabar and Dr Farid Kendoul, after they spent over 10 years developing this technology as part of CSIRO’s Robotics and Autonomous Systems group, Data61.

Emesent’s flagship product, Hovermap, has made significant impacts in the mining, infrastructure, survey, and mapping industries by allowing users to capture high quality point clouds quickly and easily, whether that’s with a walking scan, or mounting Hovermap to a compatible drone for autonomous flight.

Challenges

When Emesent contracted Absolute Translations to assist with their localisation endeavours, Emesent was a “scale-up”: a company with high revenue, lots of raised capital, and, crucially, international ambitions.

When a business hits this level early and accelerates quickly, it’s known as “hypergrowth”, which is both a chaotic and very exciting period for a scale-up where things are happening fast and hurdles are everywhere.

One of the biggest hurdles to adapting to those changes and expanding globally are new barriers of culture and language.

Emesent have a large reseller network in 30 countries so having accurate, reliable translations of documentation is imperative. It makes your customers feel seen and appreciated when you can provide documentation in their own language.

So for Emesent it was essential to have the right localisation strategy.  The potential benefits of Hovermap were universal and Emesent wanted to share those with the world.

Solutions

Emesent contacted Absolute Translations, knowing we had experience in the technology localisation industry. We arranged in-country, native translator and reviewer teams to strategise the localisation processes and the goals for each country.

Emesent’s translation requirements consisted of translation and subsequent peer-review to ensure the highest level of quality. Subsequently, Emesent’s in-country resellers took on a 2nd reviewer role to check and verify the delivered translations.  Once the translations were ready and approved, we proceeded to preparing the final format.

We worked with the memoQ server, directly exporting to InDesign (IDML and INDD formats) and in XLF formats to import directly into our Content Connector platform for our website translations. The video subtitles were done in SRT format and the User interface in a JSON format.

Results

Investing in hiring a professional translation company that use qualified in-country translation teams to localise their marketing collateral, meant that Emesent could offer their global resellers high quality localised content for their end clients locally and this gave Emesent a competitive advantage.

Emesent’s growth has soared and statistics show that the localised website has had more than 100K web page views for Japanese alone in February 2023.

Thanks to this success Emesent is continuing an impressive growth path across the APAC, EMEA and LATAM regions.

Feedback

“We’re very satisfied with the work that Absolute Translations have been doing for us. The team at Absolute Translations are always ready to help, whatever our request.”

“Absolute Translations have been an absolute God-send with our website translation. They manage the software and all updates, which takes a lot of pressure off our small team.””

“Emesent’s positive feedback means the world to us after working hard alongside them during their impressive growth these past years.

It’s exciting to be on this journey with them as they begin to need more localisation services. We love to see our partners succeed, and we stand ready to offer them the tools they need to do so at any scale.”

Challenges

In 2015, Deswik was expanding rapidly across the globe and one of the biggest hurdles to expanding globally are new barriers of culture and language.

Deswik develop innovative software technologies, so they needed to find a stable translation partner that used high-end technologies during the translation process to meet their technical demands and provide high quality localisation and transcreation services that they could trust.

The format of the files used for translation needed to be XLF.  XLF files are bilingual files that are easily processed by CAT software and that can be shared among localisation teams.

CAT software comprises productive tools and smart technology to process documents quickly and efficiently, analyse repeating content across projects, and assist the translators in maintaining highest quality during translation by ensuring consistency of terminology and writing style and offering quality control measures and tools.

Solutions

Absolute Translations established for each language combination in-country, native translator and reviewer teams specialising in software localisation, mining and marketing to strategise the localisation processes for Deswik and the corresponding goals for each country.

Each translator and reviewer were carefully selected through our strict selection procedures (reference and background checks and testing) and they were set up as Deswik’s in-country localisation teams.

The technology we used was our memoQ server. We received XLF files for translation from Deswik and we produced translated XLF files in return for the client to process in their CAT tool.

The main ideas behind using CAT software are efficiency and consistency. In XLF, all text units are separated from the layout information. While translating, the formats stay untouched and can be reimported anytime.

Our teams worked on our secure server and translation memories (TMs) were created for each language.  A TM is a database that records translated sentences for each client and that is customised based on language direction and topic/field (mining terminology, legal terminology…). TMs can be leveraged during the translation process at either LSP side or client side so we cross-shared our TMs for all of us to leverage.

Using TMs and TBs (term bases) increase consistency and productivity within a translation process and ultimately results in lower costs due to discounts offered for repeating text (repetitions, fuzzy matches).

Deswik also created project TMs with terminology reviewed and approved by own in-country localisation teams.  These resources were used as MASTER TMs. Everyone involved in the translation process could leverage these TMs and view them as approved terminology.  They were created and built with the purpose of terminology management, to know and use the client’s preferred terminology in the translation process.

As a consequence, if there was a team change for whatever reason, a new translator or reviewer could access these resources and maintain consistency with approved Deswik company terminology.

Results

Deswik’s localisation strategy proved successful. Since their inception in 2008 they expanded to 18 offices gobally.

Absolute Translations has helped Deswik recognise the importance of localisation and adapting their content for different markets.  This has enabled them to expand and successfully trade globally.

Working with CAT software has helped Deswik to work more productively and efficiently deal with all types of documents such a training guides, InDesign files, web pages and more.

By leveraging the translation memories Deswik managed to improve quality and consistency throughout their material and enabled huge cost savings thanks to the discounts they received for the repeating text, repetitions and fuzzy matches, throughout large volumes of documentation.

Absolute Translations continues to work with Deswik regularly in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese.

Client feedback

“Absolute Translations continually strives to provide localisation work that is accurate and considered and delivers to our time frames. From the start, they’ve helped us recognise the importance of adapting content for different cultures. This has enabled our company to grow globally and make sales in multiple markets.”

“We use Absolute Translations mainly for the transcreation of our marketing material, which can be quite complex with mining and technical terms. On the whole, we have been very happy with the quality of their work. They readily meet our, at times, urgent deadlines and are always ready to help with any questions we might have. We continue to use their services and we highly recommend Absolute Translations.”

VIC Police STOPIT Campaign – VO & Subtitling

Case Study

VIC Police

Victoria Police is the primary law enforcement agency for the state of Victoria in Australia. Their mission is to reduce the incidence and impact of crime, and to protect the community through various initiatives, programs, and partnerships.

It works to keep the community safe through a range of services, including emergency response, crime prevention, and community engagement.

Absolute Translations were engaged by Eric Tom & Bruce  to assist with translation and voice-over provision of 12 videos and 12 posters in 10 languages for the Unwanted Sexual Behaviour on Public Transport STOP-IT campaign of Victoria Police.

The objective

The Unwanted Sexual Behaviour on Public Transport STOPIT campaign was initiated as part of Transit Safety Division’s strategy for addressing sex offences on public transport.

A key objective of the strategy was to increase reporting of sex offences on the Victorian Public Transport Network.

Our client Eric Tom & Bruce were engaged to develop educational videos explaining the issue of unwanted sexual behaviour on the public transport network and why it is important to report public transport users’ experiences of unwanted sexual behaviour.

These videos would be delivered as part of a campaign across Victoria Police’s owned social media channels.

Challenges

Eric Tom & Bruce engaged Absolute Translations mid-June 2022 to carry out the translation, subtitling and voice-over service for the STOPIT campaign with a delivery timeframe of two weeks, to achieve the VIC Police STOPIT campaign launch early July 2022.

One of the challenges was the rarity of some languages like Khmer, Thai and Punjabi combined with the short turnaround time this was requested in. Sourcing professionally trained voice-over talents and doing the casting of those talents in 10 languages in a short timeframe presented us with a unique challenge.

Another major challenge was the length of the videos. The videos were short 6″, 15″ and 30″ second videos respectively, created specifically for social media purposes. The English voice-over scripts were created to fit these timeframes exactly, but also the foreign language voice-overs needed to fit these timeframes exactly.

This was a tough challenge in languages like Khmer, Thai, Punjabi and Turkish as these are ‘wordy’ languages and contain generally longer words than English.

With regular translation these scripts would be too long to match the videos exactly and this meant that the translations needed to be shortened and reduced in size in order to fit the timeframes of the videos.

Approach

Absolute Translations engaged NAATI certified expert translators to translate all campaign materials into the 10 target languages. This included ensuring that the translations were culturally relevant and easy to understand and also matched the length of the English source scripts exactly.

When the translations were ready, we assigned professional voice-over artists to record the campaign messages in the target languages in the correct timeframe. The voice-overs were synchronized with the original English audio so they matched the timings exactly.

Rigorous quality assurance processes were implemented to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the translations, voice-overs, and subtitles. This included multiple rounds of review and testing by native speakers of the target languages.

The campaign team actively engaged with community leaders and organisations to promote the localised materials and encourage their use. This helped build trust and awareness within the communities.

Feedback from the target communities was collected and used to make necessary adjustments to the campaign materials. This iterative process ensured that the localised content was effective and well-received.

Results

The localisation effort was highly successful, resulting in increased engagement and reporting from non-English speaking communities. The STOPIT service saw a significant rise in the number of reports from these communities, leading to more effective identification and action against offenders.

Key Takeaways

  • Inclusivity: Ensuring that all community members could access and understand the campaign materials was crucial for its success.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Adapting content to reflect cultural nuances and preferences helped build trust and acceptance.
  • Collaboration: Working with community leaders and organisations enhanced the reach and impact of the campaign.
  • Continuous Improvement: Regular feedback and iterative improvements were essential for maintaining the effectiveness of the localised content.

The STOPIT campaign’s localisation effort serves as a model for other initiatives aiming to reach diverse linguistic communities. By prioritising accurate translations, professional voice-overs, and culturally relevant content, Victoria Police successfully made the STOPIT service accessible to a wider audience, contributing to a safer public transport network for all.

Feedback

The feedback on the STOPIT campaign localisation effort by Victoria Police has been generally positive, with several key points highlighted:

Increased Reporting: The campaign has led to a significant increase in the number of reports from non-English speaking communities. Since its launch, the STOPIT service has received almost 3,000 notifications statewide, resulting in over 60 police investigations and 33 people being charged with sexual offences.

Community Empowerment: The localisation effort has empowered more commuters to report incidents of anti-social behaviour and sexual harassment. Many users have expressed feeling safer and more confident in reporting incidents, knowing that the service is accessible in their language.

Positive Impact: The campaign has been credited with making the public transport network safer. Victoria Police analysis shows that more than 40% of notifications related to threatening and offensive behaviour, while almost one in five notifications were about unwanted sexual behaviour.

Community Engagement: The localisation effort has been well-received by community leaders and organisations, who have helped promote the service and encourage its use. This collaboration has been crucial in building trust and awareness within diverse communities.

Ongoing Improvements: Victoria Police continues to seek feedback from users to make necessary adjustments and improvements to the campaign. This iterative process ensures that the localised content remains effective and relevant.

Overall, the STOPIT campaign’s localisation effort has been successful in increasing engagement and reporting from non-English speaking communities, contributing to a safer public transport environment.

Teys Group – Medical Interpreting

Home >> Case Studies

Case Study

Teys Group Australia

Teys Group Australia is a meat-processing company headquartered in Eight Mile Plains, Queensland. Founded in 1946 by the Teys brothers, the company has grown significantly over the years. Today, Teys is Australia’s second-largest meat processor and exporter, with operations in 60 countries.

Teys offers a wide range of products, including fresh beef, multi-protein, and value-added solutions. They are committed to sustainability and community support, employing over 4,700 people from 59 nationalities and supporting more than 13,000 jobs in rural and regional Australia.

To support their international workforce employed at their meat processing plants in Australia, Teys partnered with Absolute Translations in 2023 to provide ongoing remote and onsite interpreting services.

The objective

During their day-to-day work at meat processing facilities, Teys employees may become injured. When it comes to foreign workers who speak very little English, Teys offers medical interpreting services provided through Absolute Translations to overcome these language barriers.

For this purpose, Teys uses the LINK interpreting platform.

LINK assists with scheduling interpreters for injured workers’ (claimants) doctor’s appointments and keeps track of the interpreting sessions conducted and the length of the interpreting sessions as well as details the corresponding costs, interpreters, claimants, medical specialists and different locations across Australia.

The primary goal for Teys is to ensure clear and accurate communication between medical professionals and non-English-speaking employees. By providing interpreting services, Teys shows commitment to the health and well-being of their international workforce.

Using professional interpreting services provided by Absolute Translations, Teys complies with legal and regulatory requirements for providing language assistance in medical situations. It also minimises the risk of misunderstandings that could lead to incorrect treatments or prolonged recovery times.

The LINK platform allows for efficient scheduling of interpreting sessions, reducing delays in medical consultations and treatment.

So by addressing language barriers, Teys fosters a more inclusive workplace where all employees, regardless of their language, can access the same level of medical care and support. Ensuring that injured employees receive prompt and appropriate medical care helps them to recover and return to work faster, benefiting overall productivity.

Partnering with Absolute Translations and using the LINK interpreting platform aims to provide high-quality medical care, enhance employee satisfaction, ensure compliance, and maintain a safe and inclusive workplace. This strategic approach reflects Teys’ commitment to supporting their diverse workforce and optimising operational efficiency.

LINK Interpreting platform – what does it look like?

Challenges

With a significant portion of their manual workforce being international workers with limited English, communication issues arose when it came to medical consultations:

  • Many employees spoke limited English, which created challenges in understanding and conveying medical information correctly.
  • When there are misunderstandings between medical professionals and employees, the quality of medical care can be compromised.
  • If the quality of medical care is compromised, legal consequences can ensue.

Before contracting Absolute Translations, Teys was sourcing medical interpreters internally. This presented quite a few challenges:

  • Finding and vetting qualified interpreters was resource-intensive and diverted the attention from other important tasks.
  • Coordinating the claimants, medical doctors and interpreters’ schedules and managing the bookings added to the claims managers’ administrative workload.
  • This also resulted in higher costs due to the lack of streamlined processes and automation.
  • When an urgent situation arose, sourcing a qualified interpreter was proving difficult, stressful and time-consuming.
  • There was no streamlined process to track interpreters’ performances, hours worked and the service quality.

Overall, there was limited quality and efficiency sourcing interpreters manually and the costs in doing so far outweighed the costs in working with quality provider of interpreting services, so Teys contracted Absolute Translations to provide quality medical interpreting as well as provide the platform to schedule and book interpreters.

Approach

When Absolute Translations was contracted by Teys Group Australia for onsite medical interpreting services, we approached the new contract with a comprehensive and client-focused strategy:

Absolute Translations conducted an initial assessment to understand Teys’ specific requirements, including the languages needed, the frequency of the interpreting services required, and the types of medical consultations.

We assembled a team of professional NAATI certified interpreters who were not only fluent in the required languages but also had expertise interpreting in medical settings, were familiar with medical terminology and also had the cultural competence.

For Teys it was important to use appropriate technology. The LINK interpreting platform facilitates seamless scheduling and coordination of interpreting sessions and after an initial trial period, Teys was confident this was the right platform for their needs.

We provided training sessions for Teys’ staff to ensure efficient use of the interpreting platform such as booking sessions and entering claimant and medical practitioner details to automate this process for future interpreting sessions.

We implemented rigorous quality control measures to ensure that all interpreting services met high standards of accuracy and professionalism. We established a feedback loop with Teys to continuously assess and improve the interpreting services, addressing any issues and making adjustments as needed.

By taking these steps, we ensured that Teys Group Australia received high-quality, reliable interpreting services that enhanced communication between medical practitioners and international workers, ultimately improving the overall safety and well-being of Teys’ employees.

Results

Teys Group Australia’s collaboration with Absolute Translations and the implementation of the LINK platform have significantly improved communication and medical care for their international workers. This partnership highlights Teys’ dedication to employee safety and well-being, setting a benchmark for other companies in the industry.

The collaboration resulted in significantly improved communication between doctors and Teys’ claimants, ensuring that medical information was accurately conveyed and understood.

Clear and precise communication enabled by Absolute Translations’ qualified NAATI certified medical interpreters enhanced the overall safety and well-being of employees, leading to better medical outcomes and faster recovery times.

The seamless scheduling of interpreting sessions reduced delays in sourcing interpreters, improved the efficiency for Teys’ claims managing team, resulted in better medical consultations overall while also streamlining the process and ensuring timely medical care for their workers.

By addressing the language barriers and providing necessary support, Teys fostered a more inclusive and supportive work environment, showing their commitment to their diverse workforce, and it helped Teys comply with legal and regulatory requirements, enhancing their reputation as a responsible employer.

Conclusion

Contracting Absolute Translations for qualified NAATI certified interpreting services and implementing the use of LINK, Teys not only significantly improved communications and medical care for their international workers, they also increased efficiency and reduced overall costs.

Absolute Translations’ medical interpreting team contributed the following:

  • Medical terminology is complex and needs to be precise. Our qualified interpreters ensured that both the patient’s symptoms and the doctor’s instructions were communicated accurately. This reduced the risk of misunderstandings that could affect diagnosis and treatment.
  • Miscommunication in medical settings can lead to serious consequences, including incorrect treatments, medication errors, and missed follow-ups. Our qualified interpreters helped to safeguard patient safety by ensuring clear and accurate communication.
  • Our professional interpreters are trained to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards such as the AUSIT Code of Ethics, which is essential in building trust between patients and healthcare providers.
  • Understanding cultural nuances can greatly impact patient care. Absolute Translations’ interpreters are trained for cultural competence, helping to bridge cultural gaps so the medical practitioner can provide a more holistic care.
  • Medical situations can be stressful and intimidating, especially for non-English-speaking patients. Our skilled interpreters provided emotional support by facilitating better communication and understanding, making patients feel more at ease.
  • Many countries have legal requirements for providing interpreting services in healthcare settings. Using qualified interpreters helped Teys comply with these regulations and avoid legal issues.

Absolute Translations’ LINK interpreting system contributed the following:

  • The system automated scheduling and management of interpreting services, saving time and reducing administrative workload. This allowed Teys to focus on their core activities.
  • Absolute Translations’ Interpreter Hub provided access to a pool of 13,000 qualified interpreters in over 300 languages, ensuring that language support was available whenever needed.
  • The platform offered on-demand interpreting services, including over-the-phone and video remote interpreting, which could be quickly accessed to meet immediate needs.
  • By leveraging both onsite medical interpreters and the Interpreter Hub for additional support, Teys was able to optimise their resources and reduce administration and interpreting costs.
  • Providing language support enhanced employee satisfaction by ensuring that all employees, regardless of their language, received the same level of service and attention.
  • The platform is easily scaleable to accommodate growing needs, whether it’s for a small team or a large organisation, making it a versatile solution for businesses of all sizes.
  • LINK’s intelligent routing technology ensured quick response times and efficient use of interpreter resources, improving overall service delivery.

By integrating the LINK interpreting system, Teys significantly improved their communication processes, enhanced employee satisfaction, and ensured compliance with language support regulations, all while optimising their resources and reducing administration and interpreting costs.
